MY NIGHT AT THE ASTRAS 2011

What a night!!!!!!! Being able to do a job I love, walk the red carpet and win awards is mind blowing. But like any good renovation on a house, getting ready for the Astras is not effortless. I literally had a 'team' helping me get ready.
Getting there for a start was an effort. Charlie and I were working for 3 days on our first make-over for the new series 5 of Selling Houses Australia and the weather 'gods' were against us. Freezing temperatures, howling winds, constant rain and we were under the pump to get this makeover done.

I flew out of the house barking orders of all the last minute things so I could try and get to the red carpet on time! By the time I got to the hotel room the 'miracle' worker Peita Gregory, disguised as a make-up lady, was knocking on my door and I hadnt even got in there yet. A quick and very hot shower to try and warm up my bones and it was time for the 'renovation' of Shaynna.

To take a few steps back, the week before I was at Sophie Harts studio to try on a dress for the night. The second dress on and we knew that was the one. BUT it was a tiny fit and it took 3 girls to do up the zip! Yes, I could not breath or even bend over to put my shoes on but in the words of Sophie, from now it is 'Nil by Mouth'. And so for the next 7 days I thought of that dress and deleted carbs from my life. (Except for an amazing dinner with family where we had 4 courses, but dont tell anyone!). Sophie sent pictures of what type of hair style I should have, what accessories and I was excited and terrified at the same time. It better fit by red carpet time!

My outfit and accessories were all on loan and I want to thank these companies for letting me wear their items and hope I did them justice. I know I would wear every piece again as I literally felt amazing!

The Dress
The stunning Midnight Blue dress was by George Gross. The cut on this dress really hugged my curves. Yes I have boobs and yes I have hips but most of all it sucked in my waist and I totally felt sexy. Every woman should have a dress that makes them feel like this.

The Accessories:

Clutch Bag - by Oroton (can I say this is my favourite bag ever, it had a beautiful weight to it and didnt catch on anything. You know when you have a bag with stones and details and it always catches on something, well this one didnt. I highly recommend this bag and it is from their new collection).
Shoes - Peep toe - look at the detail on the heels - Grrrrrrr
Earrings - Mimco - I felt like I was channeling Penelope Cruz with these beauties. Elegant and sophisticated. Sophie Harts eye for detail is incredible and she knew these would stand on their own with out needing a necklace.
Ring - Diva - just a simple bit of shimmer to finish it all off.

Peita did an incredible job to make my eyes smokey, my skin shimmer and the relaxed 'bed hair' hairstyle was by her associate Luke Davis

But the best thing on my arm was my husband. His support through all my travel, time away from the family and lack of cooking and cleaning anymore (I do love that one!) has let me not only do this amazing job but enjoy it. Thank you Steve for never making me feel guilty chasing my dreams.

Now for the fun bit. The after party is the time for us to celebrity spot and gush at each others clothes and say a bit congrats!!
EVERY girl looked stunning and the guys looked incredible. There really is something incredible about dressing up to make you feel fantastic.

One of my big squeals of the night was meeting Geoff Morrell who played Lester Lamb in the fantastic mini series Cloudstreet. I loved watching that series so much and his character and acting was brilliant. But what blew me away was after I gushed about his show, he started talking about episodes of Selling Houses Australia and how he loved our show. WOW!!!

Thank you again to everyone for your votes, support and most of all watching our show. We love making it so it is brilliant to know you love watching it to!!!!!

EATING AT THE OFFICE

I am back on the crazy whirlwind of traveling around the country with my clients and for the filming of Series 5 (can you believe it!) of Selling Houses Australia.
What comes with that is not only long hours of sitting on your behind in taxis, cars, and planes but trying to eat well the whole day. Trouble is I am gluten free and no red meat and they are challenges of their own. So today I had the wonderful pleasure of cooking myself a gourmet breakfast at home. I did have to get up at 5.30am and do 3hrs of work first but this way a very nice reward.

Do you start your day properly or do you struggle to keep a healthy diet with your work hours. Would love to hear how you 'eat at the office' whether it is at home, at a work office or on the run. Any tips for us to share would be great.
One of my tips is I take a small glad bag of protein powder to put in a glass of water for between meals while I am on the run. It doesnt fill me (as I love to eat rather than drink my food) but it takes the edge off the hunger till I can get a proper meal. And of course have a couple of pieces of fruit and a water bottle handy. Your tips??

ROOM WITH A VIEW - KITCHEN WINDOW

Today's room with a room comes via my kitchen window! Two weeks till winter and Autumn is doing her final coat of colours dance like a very proud peacock. Last week it snowed only 30kms from my house but this morning the air has a warm tinge like an early breath of Spring. Mother Nature confused? Well is was meant to be 'Rapture' yesterday, so a little weather hangover is understandable. If this is Mother Nature's hangover I don't even need to take an asprin with this to cope with something so beautiful.
What is your favourite view from your home? I would love to hear about yours.

THE ROASTING WAREHOUSE - SYDNEY

Those who know me, know I don't drink coffee (I gave it up 6 years ago for those who are interested) and I love my tea but when you are stuck for one hour with no tea house in sight, a great coffee house is a good place to plant yourself while you are waiting for a meeting.

Di Bella Roasting Warehouse in Surrey Hills, Sydney is the perfect combination of atmosphere, product and service. The staff were happy and looked like they loved working there and to satisfy my needs, yes I was able to get a nice pot of White tea, and they even refilled with extra water with a smile!

What I think works the best is the atmosphere they create with their interior. Polished agragate concrete floor, simple industrial chairs and benches with knotted wood timber.

The warmth and feature comes from their roasted beans in hessian bags, fresh loaves on hessian blocks and the center piece being a huge working bean roaster.

Every thing on display you can buy, from the beans to the machines to the cups. So the decor is working hard for them!

The acoustics aren't great but you are not there for fine dining, you are there for a robust coffee catch- up and so it works.
I don't miss coffee as the aroma of roasted beans is enough for me and this warehouse is filled with the warm, rich fragrances of coffee. A place to please all the senses.

My only criticism? Get some pots that pour the tea into the cup and not all over the bench :( But that is an easy fix.
A definite recommendation for Sydney coffee lovers.

AUSTRALIA'S BARGAIN PROPERTY?

At $50 million you can hardly call it a bargain but when a property is reduced by almost 25% of its asking price ($18 million) it has to be a bargain - right?
Look at some the features -

2478 hectares of sprawling land

Two Swimming Pools ( where is the slide!!!!)

Two helipads, two pools, tennis court, river, dam and three cottages. Only three?

Artificial insemination room for 300 horses (handy for some) and a private polo ground.

It all sounds incredibly indulgent of things you 'just cant live without' but it really let me down with the sauna. I can honestly say from all the homes I have visited and/or redesigned the sauna is the most under used and over rated room of any house.

Impressed? Unimpressed? What room or feature do you think is the most useless addition to a house?

COAT HANGER CHAIR - MILAN DESIGN WEEK

I don't know about you but I find my plastic coat hangers snap pretty easily that I am slowly converting them all to timber. So I dont know how this Coat Check Chair by Joey Zeledon is going to stand (or sit) up to the wear and tear of daily use. Plus I dont really trust myself not becoming a tangled mess in the hangers on the back. Funky and colourful idea but I don't see this new design taking off. Do you?

Inspiration comes in many forms and nothing like a traditional Hot Cross bun to inspire your furniture. I doubt designer Elvis Pennetuzzo had Good Friday and warm toasty buns in mind when he came up with this funky arrangement of furniture but I like to think we can get inspiration from anything, anywhere and anytime.

4 WAYS TO RECYCLE YOUR DEAD BIKE

We love the environment, we love being healthy and we love riding our bike so here are 5 ways to recycle your bike and bike parts when you upgrade to that shiny new model.

LIGHTING

Bike chains are usually dirty horrible things that leave grease marks on your legs and a place to get your pant leg caught up in. Usually you curse at them when they fall off when you cant get the damn thing back on but these chandeliers by Carolina Fontoura Alzaga are stunning. Not only has she given these much sworn at items a new lease of life but she has created a traditional look by creating sculptural talking pieces. They maybe too heavy for delicate interiors but I think they have a place in many modern homes, even warehouses of today.

FURNITURE

Who would have thought bike rims and bike tubes could look so comfortable! I think I'd like that chair to sit on the side of road races so when some-one breaks down I can ask them to 'throw a rim my way'. On second thoughts, I could end up wearing it after that remark. Bike Furniture founder Andy Gregg has spent many years on the bike and in bike shops so it looks like he worked out where to unleash his frustration to make beautiful furniture that otherwise would have ended up on the scrap heap.

OUTDOOR FENCING

On a trip to Bright we came along this fence made from recycled parts. There is a great bike track that cover Wangarratta, Beechworth and Bright so all I can imagine is there were a few of those who abandoned the trip and decided the wineries or bakeries were a better option.

JEWELERY

I have seen some very ordinary necklaces

made from a solid bike chain but these pieces

actually have some style and class to them.

Re-cycled Accessories are having a special at

THESE SHOES WERE MADE FOR.......BATHING?

Now this has to be a Carrie Bradshaw must have! Designer bath tub in the shape of a shoe? It is not to everybody's taste but there must be a market out there for ladies who have a whole room (or wing of a house) dedicated to shoes.
These Audrey and Audreyette baths have been created by SIGIS who are known for their incredible mosaic designs and strong colours. The bath is created in a mold and then the tile designs are put on by hand. I cant even imagine how much it costs and as I am asking, I obviously cant afford it!

What I do love is the waterfall spout that will tumble water down on to your luscious locks making you feel like an expensive, pampered goddess.

I still think they should have called them Carrie and Carriette!

10 THINGS THAT MAKE A BEAUTIFUL HOME

We all love flicking through the glossy pages of magazines and peering into celebrity homes, but to often it is followed with a sigh of 'oh but I could never have that'.
You may not have their home, location or budget and you are constantly aspiring to the home of your dreams, but the essence of creating a home is universal.
As an Interior Designer I get the opportunity of creating beautiful homes and work with incredible budgets but in the end we are all after the same thing.

1. Shelter - the basics are covered by a roof and walls. Due to poverty, disasters (as we have seen all to often recently with the natural disasters that have hit Far North Queensland, New Zealand and Japan just recently). Our shelter is a basic necessity and a home provides this. Size really doesn't matter. Everyone needs a place to call home.

2. Happiness - if you can walk in your door and have a smile on your face at what you see, then you have a happy home. Stop wishing and wanting what you don't have, and look at what you DO have and what you can do to make it look and feel better.

3. Family & friends - A home is a place that is filled with laughter and it has an environment that puts everyone at ease. A place people want to be.

4. Food - cafes and restaurants are a wonderful treat but home cooked food feeds the soul.

5. Sanity - Having peace of mind that everything has a place means you aren't scattered all over place. Order creates time for you to do more things instead of wasting your time looking for that lost bill (found one this weekend!), the car keys and falling over all the toys in the house.
Being organized DOES give you sanity (and sometimes you find cash : another true story!).

6. Security - displacement is very real and if you have a place you feel you belong to then you know you are wanted and will feel secure about you and how people respond to you.

7. Nature - our plants are what feed the earth and feed us as people. There is something about the connection with the earth that brings peace & serenity. Even if you only have a courtyard, growing herbs in a pot is enough to give you a healthy link with Mother Earth.

8. Pets - Someone to care for and give back love can add years to your life. Having a pet means responsibility, but that makes us better people in the long run. For a long time pets have been used for therapy in nursing homes, injured able and brain affected people. The feeling of having a pet in your life creates a very different love that we have with humans.

9. Freedom - A home is a place to express who you are and how you want to be without being judged by the world. You may get judged and laughed at by your immediate family but hey, isn't that what family is for?

A TURTLE, A MOPED & AN IGLOO IN SOUTH YARRA

The other day I was trying to get a park in this busy, narrow st in Sth Yarra. I go there often to do voice overs and usually get a park right out the front of the studio. But this day I did the circuit at least 3 times and then had to park a 15 minute walk away.
Melbourne is full of lanes and interesting streets and you get so used to them you forget to take notice. I whizz past this cafe often so it was nice and refreshing to slow down and take a closer look. The street is dull, the cafe is opposite a train station and wedged between office and apartments but that hasnt stopped it putting out a little personality.

The place is so casual that no one had any idea why this inflatable igloo was right next to it.

PS A week later I walked by (without my camera, damn!) and it was a pop up shoe store! Brilliant. Hope it is there next week when I walk by!

SELLING HOUSES EXTREME-Port Douglas - SHIRTLESS & THANK-YOU!

Well, I started a little frenzy saying my hubby will be in the background tonight - 'shirtless'!!!! With his permission - here he is. Now this is a tale to all of you out there to wear sunscreen or you might end up with a runway on your back too. The funny thing was he took his shirt off, wrapped it around his head to protect him from the sun (that stripe is where the T-Shirt dangled) but didnt think what it would do to his back!!

On another note, I do have to thank a few people up in Port Douglas. (If you want to know all the suppliers of the show, go to the link earlier) Of course the owners and their family were fantastic and worked so hard the whole time and their daughter organised for us to do a trip with HABADIVE snorkeling tour after the make-over.
This was so greatly appreciated as every single person, except a certain some-one who was working on his tan (cough cough Andrew Winter ), worked to exhaustion on this makeover. As most of us were from Sydney and Melbourne we couldn't believe the humidity and how it depleted you. We had planned some nice dinner evenings after the make-overs but after sometimes 12hr days, no-one could bare having to socalize.

Then there is Phil and the team at Century21 in Port Douglas, they were the most accommodating group of people and I have been tweeting with them ever since (@portdouglas21 )
I also have to say a big big thanks to Tom from Oceanic Art Gallery who allowed me to borrow the most amazing and precious aboriginal art to create a truly amazing makeover for this episode.

Port Douglas Beach

The community in Port Douglas we totally behind us the whole time we were there and cannot speak highly of them all.
The tourist industry was already suffering up North from the GFC but with the news of floods and cyclones people think that they should stay away. Well I can tell you it is just as beautiful now as always and was very lucky to miss most of the brunt of the the cyclone.
So if you are thinking of taking a holiday PLEASE go to Port Douglas and enjoy the beauty that it has!

I would love to hear of your experiences of Far North Queensland and if you plan to go what you would like to see. The list of bars, restaurants, day trips is huge so I wont bore yo with them - share here so everyone can see the great places to go.

THE WORLDS GREATEST SHAVE

Good things do come out of bad. Yesterday my nephew shaved his head for The Worlds Greatest Shave in support of his Step Mother who is going through treatment for breast cancer. This foundation supports Leukemia Foundation but it is also a symbolic way to help support anybody going through an illness.
As a 13 yr old he knew he couldn't do anything medically to help her but by shaving his head, at least he had a way of showing her he cared by raising money for research and support.

Even more remarkable, he picked his 14th birthday to mark the occasion. His Mum and Step Dad went into overdrive to work out how they could help get the most attention and raise as much money as possible in their support. Their local McDonalds, at Chelsea heights agreed to let them put a Marquee from Nunawading Tri Club in the carpark, put flyers in their take-away bags (printed for free by expo print ) and also offered 20% of sales while we were there.

Having a family business in signage, Scotchline Signs, saw a huge banner placed at the front of McDonalds, we held small signs and walked inside and asked people if they wanted to spray their hair or shave their heads to get in the spirit of things. Hair colour was the most popular option!

But there were a few brave ones - one of his friends, my husband and two to the young staff (above) even braved the clippers all in the name of cancer support.

The hairdresser Jen from 'All Ways Ahead' donated her time and pitched in with money.
His Dad, a fire man, was called away to a job but was back just in time to do the first shave and then the immediate family took turns in helping shave his head. This was such a beautiful touch as it showed everyone was there to support him (maybe there was a little joy in that part!)

Even with an unusually slow Friday night at McDonalds (due to Friday Night AFL grand final & the beginning of a long weekend) my nephew was still able to raise $1405.00 all up!!!

If anyone gets disillusioned with the youth of the day, just have a think of this story and know there are kids out there with big hearts!

His goal was to reach $1,000 so surpassed his goal!!! If you would like to donate to the foundation here is the link!

HOUSE AND GARDEN LOVED MY DOG!

It's not everyday you get featured in a national magazine at home so I was pretty nervous having a magazine company coming into my home. For one, you can only imagine the houses they see and two, the country seeing where I live!!
Here you see my love for Black and white in the paintings, walls, rug and furniture and my clothes. But who got the most votes on the day? Our gorgeous dog Coco.
Coco sat on the sidelines patiently as they set up and just before the first frame she 'slunk' into the picture!
She completed the picture because she is black and white but what I love is it shows I live in a home!

BEECHWORTH, NED KELLY & BEN COUSINS - SUCH IS LIFE

SUCH IS LIFE.

The famous words uttered by Ned Kelly as the noose was put around his neck just before he was hanged in Melbourne Goal.

Ned Kelly has a close association with Beechworth and its goals, he was first registered in their goals at the age of 16 and spent six months there. His last stand was at Glenrowan in 1880 with his preliminary trial at Beechworth Courthouse (below) before being sent to Melbourne Criminal Courts.

This expression is uttered by some Australians but it's most infamous outing since Ned Kelly was when Ben Cousins was picked up by police and his tattoo was 'splashed' across his stomach and every newspaper in the country.

It is such a strong expression and this statue of Ned Kelly shows how he 'stands' by his quote.

I'm am sure Ned regrets getting caught so young and I regret on behalf of Ben Cousins how his tattoo ruined the perfect view of such a perfect six-pack.

BEECHWORTH, BEES & HONEY.

On a quick trip back from Falls Creek last week we dropped in for lunch as my husband had to try the the pies from the famous pie bakery, he ate enough that bordered on embarassing!
Beechworth is a place I have wanted to visit for a long time and after our fleeting visit we are already planning a week there to discover the town and its surroundings. I was able to drag my husband and his bloated belly from the pie shop to take a sneak peak at the famous (everything here is famous - see Ned Kelly), Beechworth Honey shop.

You can see live bees as they work in their hives,

try skin care,

drink lemon drinks,

and buy honey wax candles.

But of course the main thing is the honey, the huge amount of varieties is mind-blowing. We tasted most types and came home with Creamed Honey and Orange Blossom.

It looks like the next trip wont be far away, as we need to replenish the honey jars pretty soon!

BEECHWORTH'S FAMOUS PIE & LOLLY SHOPS

Everywhere you go in Beechworth it is famous for something. Honey & Ned Kelly are two well known features, but this day we came for the famous pies and lolly shop.

My husband had just competed at Falls Creek's first Triathlon and after such a huge race he was ready to devour the whole shop. Well, he came pretty close to it!

I settled for the petite Blueberry tart.

The next stop was the lolly shop. I cant show you any pictures from inside as no cameras were allowed but I was literally like a 'kid in a lolly shop' not knowing what to buy, taste or look at.

There is such a huge selection it is overwhelming so give yourself time, and a big wad of money to get the most out of this shop.

By the way Steve can confirm the curry pie, steak pie and custard roll are worthy of any blue ribbon and I can confirm the blueberry tart was perfect.

Unlike my husband, one was enough for me!

SELLING HOUSES EXTREME- Behind the scenes

Series Four is airing from February 16th 2011 and if you have FOXTEL/AUSTAR you couldnt miss the ads promoting the show. I can honestly say it was hilarious making the commercial and seeing the result on the Tv has the whole family in stitches everytime.
What is even funnier is they have put up a behind the scenes video and it shows how much we enjoy working together. I am very lucky!!!

Last night I was invited to a media event at Aqua Dining for Foxtel/Austar. The place and view was stunning, the weather was perfect and of course the food was exquisite.

But the best bit was I got to mingle with some great people from the regional press for radio and newspapers and also rub shoulders with a few celebrities! The perks of the industry I suppose. It was a fantastic night and we were tucked up in bed by 10pm and every-one behaved (from what I saw!)
I don't get much of a chance to mix with the sporting community so I was starstruck to meet the wonderfully happy Geoff Hugel, Sports Ambassador for Foxtel,

the brilliant Mark Occhilupo from Fuel TV ,

Greg Clark, 'just an old rugby guy', (as he introduced himself) from Fox sports.

(He looked pretty good to me!)

and the gorgeous Jane Gazzo from Channel V was spinning the tunes.

I have loved her from her early days at Triple JJJ so it was so great to meet

this brilliant lady of music.

Another perk was the Haig's chocolates as we left to hail a cab- Now THAT'S a chocolate frog.

And that is why I ended up here at a horrible hour the next morning!

This week I start a lifelong dream of learning French. It has always been a case no time but have the money or no money but have the time. Well I am a rabbit in the year of the rabbit so I feel something positive is lining up for me as this week is my first lesson!

I have been to Paris once for five days and it felt like home and I have been waiting for the opportunity to go there again for at least a month to trawl the markets, cook in Provence and ride a push bike to.... well not sure, but anywhere will be great!
I am hoping to book a shopping experience with the wonderful Claudia from The Paris Apartment and find some incredible one-off pieces to bring back to Australia for shoots, clients and maybe a little one will sneak in there for me ;)
Wish me luck and hopefully a little French will weave into my posts in the future!

Another way to look at your pantry is called Pantry Pervert by Samantha Gowing. Organising your pantry is one thing but what are you keeping in there? When you are on a diet we are so focused on healthy, low-fat and low-calorie but are you aware of out of date and toxic substances lurking within your pantry? Organising gives you a chance to look at everything in your pantry and get it fit and back on track with healthy eating.

While you are organising your pantry why not look at other areas of your house that need a bit of a clean up. Think wardrobe - I'm sure we all have way to many shoes out there! Getting your house in order always feels like a fresh start and if you work hard enough you may even burn a few calories!

My gorgeous husband bought me this brilliant Nikon camera for Christmas to help me with my Interior Design company but also create great pics for my blog. As I am a bit of a Klutz I immediatley went to the camera store on boxing day to buy a camera bag and bought this Sling bag from Lowepro.
What I love about it is the padded body & lots of pockets & holds all I need at this stage to go out for the day with my camera without taking a second bag. What I do love mostly is, it isn't clunky, I can throw it over my shoulder and looks like an everyday traveling bag.

I am always on the look out to make sure there isnt something else and I came across the fantastic Kelly Moore site. The bags are to die for! With Kelly being a professional photographer herself she has the inside info on what a professional photographer needs.

As an amateur I feel I must learn from the experts and need to purchase one of her bags to show me how to really feel like a professional ;) After all, a girl shouldn't just have one bag for an occasion. Should she?

Kelly also does a tutorial on how to use her bags and what each style can hold. The mustard bag above is from the men's range but I quite like it for myself.

AUSTRALIA- "I LOVE A SUNBURNT COUNTRY"

As I write Australia is going through one of the worst flood periods in decades. After decades of drought the flood gates have opened in the Northern Eastern states of this vast land we call Australia.

While over at the bottom of Western Australia we are combating terrible bushfires. Australia is a beautiful but sometimes harsh land to deal with. As a country we are constantly devastated by the natural occurances put before us but the hope and mateship of this great land means that children are even giving away their tooth fairy money to help those who have lost everything. So far the Australian public has donated $29 million dollars and counting, to those who literally only have the shirt on their backs. The loss of homes, livestock and crops is nothing compared to the the lives that are lost in these natural disasters.
We will pull through and we will band together and our hearts and donations go out to those going through such terrible devastation. For those who dont understand Australia I think it has neve been said better than 19 year-old Dorethea MeKellar in her poem My Country, 1904.

MY COUNTRY

The love of field and coppice,

Of ordered woods and gardens

LITTLE CREATURES - BIG PUB, AUSTRALIAN STYLE

We spent a lazy Sunday afternoon yesterday for my daughters birthday at Little Creatures in Fitzroy. The original brewery is in Fremantle, WA, which I have never been to, but the if it is anything like the one in Fitzroy they have a great pub on their hands.
The area is vast and open with long tables with stools for casual get togethers and retro styled eating booths on the main floor for smaller groups. The atmosphere is relaxed filled with a chatty vibe but it is the simple, quirky touches that make it such a great place to visit.

I don't drink beer but my son, husband and it seems a lot of others there can vouch it is a great Aussie brewed beer. You don't have to drink beer to enjoy the day, it is family friendly (the little creatures got a great play work out with the little kids in our party) and a place we will definitely be visiting again.

I love random groups on Facebook, especially this one. International Fairy Bread Day. Why do I love it so much? Well for a start it is Fairy Bread of course, secondly it has been at everyone of my childhood birthday parties and my children's birthday parties but the best reason is, my son.

BE SAFE ON THE ROADS -WE DO, ONLY HAVE ONE LIFE

With my children now as young adults I still fear when they go on the road but the angst I feel is no-where near what I felt as they first got their license. In Australia a teenager gets their license the same day they are legally allowed to drink. And we wonder why there are so many teen deaths and accidents?
This is not just about being a parent not understanding the fun their children want to have, it is about wanting them to know the consequences of their actions. We all make mistakes but some can't be fixed.

This video was the winner of the 2010 TAC competition. Made and acted all by young adults and produced by a very talented friend of mine, Amey Lee.
Please show this video to your children, friends children and of course no matter what age you are please be safe out there.

2011- Starting with the right attitude.

This New Years Eve was all about taking it easy and not stressing to much. We had a small gathering of only 10 people, everyone bought a plate, a bottle of something and we took it in turns making a cocktail.
I started the evening setting up the table for the cocktails, put together divine salmon crepe stacks and zucchini & corn fritters, took a couple of snaps and then the guests arrived.
I had every intention for having some great snaps of the food, the setting and our friends but alas I was relaxing so much I didnt get the camera out for the rest of the night. If I had you would have seen pics of laughter and happiness and a group of people totally relaxing. So I guess I have already started my year on the right track and letting life happen without the stress.
Cheers to you all and I hope 2011 is starting on the right track for you.

WINE, SUN, FRIENDS & PICTURE BOOK SCENERY

Yesterday my husband and I (and a bus load of others) were lucky enough to share a very special birthday celebaration for a special friend. The mystery location, which was indicated on the invitation ended up being a bit of a mystery for the bus driver as we traveled up and down a dusty road trying to find where this winery was! But it was worth it, at the end of the unmade road was little bit of Tuscany in Panton Hill.

We were treated to a tasting by the owners (who built the house) under the watchful eye of their resident dog. The weather of late has been torrential rain and thunderstorms but on this day it was perfect blue skies and a slight hint of breeze kept us all comfortable as we drank, ate and mostly laughed.
I can't think of a better way to toast the end of 2010 into 2011.

I have no idea if this artist got their inspiration from Australian Native gumnuts but that is the first thing I thought of when I saw this street sculpture in Melbourne. I wish I could ask him/her but there was no plaque to say who the artist was - if anyone knows who it is please post details.

I love a flower that demands your attention and nothing is as dramatic as the King Protea. The vase needs to be tall and keep everything with it simple. You could go for more green leaves to make it full but I have gone for white tortured willow for extra height and a little 'winter' Christmas magic in the Australian summer.

At $15 for a bunch of 3 and will last at least 2 weeks, I think this is massive value for money.

Everytime I see a new bloom in Spring it sends a warm shiver up & down my spine. A surprising one today was the bunch of flowers on my spindly crab apple tree. There is no fragrance, and it only lasts a couple of days, but the smile it puts on my face seems so much longer.

A couple of weeks ago I drove to Berry to see the wedding of my co-presenter, Charlie Albone. What a celebration!! He married the gorgeous Juliet Love who he met on The Party Garden on The LifeStyle Channel. It was a stunning wedding and Berry is a mixture of Daylesford in Victoria and the countryside of England. There was lots of laughter, celebrating ( a few drinks might have been in the mix), dancing and little market time! Definitely a place I recommend to visit on a lazy weekend.

I write most of my pieces to camera for Selling Houses Australia and my YouTube channel videos but trying to remember everything while building is going on around you and a filming team hoping you get it in take, does produce a little 'mind blank' in the pressure cooker.
Mnemonics is a memory tool to help you remember things like peoples names, formulas and in general - your lines! I haven't given it a go yet but look forward to putting it into practice as we have begun film series four!

I have been working in a renovation at a private residence and have been literally working from the front yard, inside then to the backyard.
The transition from the garden to the front door is a real problem as the walkway is through the garage. To create a diversion and that all important 'wow' factor I approached h2O Designs to help us with the problem.
In this video, Part 1 takes us through the stages of what it takes before you get to that all important final product.
We are working on Part 2 now and I can tell you - the end result is amazing!!

Whenever these events are on I go straight to the Vivid display where furniture and decor items by student, up & coming and established designers display innovative and exciting pieces.
This year was no exception in what it had to offer. I was lucky enough to chat with Damien Hipwell from Studio Hip who had two pieces on show, with the childrens chair and table set winning an award (cutely named 'strongman table and chairs!). Damien is a professional furniture maker and approaches his designs and manufacturing with high environmental and ethical standards.

I loved his Studio chair - a contemporary piece with influences of the retro furniture era . Damien is a true craftsman with a passion for his work - if you are looking for a unique piece Damien welcomes commissions - so look him up!

STRONG MAN! TABLE & CHAIRS

The other pieces that caught my eye where from students developing their design and manufacturing skills, so make sure you look out for these names in the future.

My article in today's Melb Herald Sun is all about the Melbourne Open House Scheme. If you are planning to visit Melbourne on 24th & 25th July I totally recommend at least spending half a day looking at a few buildings to get an inside look on Melbourne.
I you live in our gorgeous city make sure you take time out of kids sport, work or GET OFF THE COUCH! to see the hidden architecture jewels of Melbourne.
Most have 15-20 guided tours to areas that aren't generally open to the public. All are free but booking is recommended.

V-Walls from H2O Designs

A large expansive view from the main living areas of your home, or a view from your bedroom window not only adds value to your home but is like 'living artwork' captured from your window.
As our house blocks are getting smaller and houses are built closer to the fence line, the possibility of those magical views are becoming less and less of a reality.
We are living more and more with small courtyards in our homes, and balconies in our apartments are a valued commodity. Less space though, doesn't mean you have to compromise on the 'green' in your view. The solution to the smallest space of problems is:Vertical Gardening
Vertical Gardening can be used to screen an ugly wall, give privacy from prying neighbours and even feed the family with a hanging garden for vegetables and herbs.
These V-shaped wall planters (above) from H2O Designs are lightweight and can be easily installed in most situations. They are made from an expanded polystyrene with a cement render coating, so it is easy to hang and wont put stress on your walls all while looking solid. A standard size 3-tier screen of 1.5m by 1m only stepps out 300mm from its wall frame, which means it is no deeper than your average pot plant. You can get larger sizes with more tiers or stack a row of them along the wall. The screens also come as a freestanding unit, which gives flexibility in small courtyards, and if you are renting you can bring your garden with you and take it when you leave!

Water tanks are a necessity in our gardens of today but looking out at the robust structures from you kitchen window can tend to be an eye-sore. Again, creating a vertical garden is the perfect solution. If you are looking for a DIY project for the weekend this screen is made from packing pallets perfect.
You will need to first build a basic frame to mount the pallets then run a plane over any areas that look like they may splinter or pierce the plants. Create a base in the rungs to support the plants and paint. You can line the troughs with a weed mat liner, a small layer of moss and follow with potting mix. If you can find pots small enough to fit, it will be an even easier way to fill the wall with green. Succulents are very suitable as they don't require a great deal of space for their root system and are low maintenance.
To complete the picture perfect view, all you need is an outdoor setting, an umbrella and a few quiet drinks with friends!

The night of nights for Foxtel/Austar, the 8th ASTRA AWARDS, was held on Thursday night at the State Theatre in Sydney. What a fantastic night, but made even more fantastic that Selling Houses Australia cleaned up in the awards! Not only that, The LifeStyle Channel was voted Channel of the Year. These awards are industry and viewer voted and to win in both categories is mind blowing!
Thank you to everyone who voted and who watches our show. We are the highest rating show on The LifeStyle Channel and now the most popular! (sorry, I am so proud but please allow me to blow my trumpet a little!!)

My love of Black & White comes with it's draw backs. DUST!!!!!! I have Black & White in my interiors, I wear ALOT of black, I have a Black & White Border Collie. With all the dust and dog hair invading my life I wish I had the need to be more like a 50's housewife and have time to clean my surfaces on an everyday basis. I will not give up my Black & White, or my dog for that matter so dust will remain my mortal enemy till a Fairy godmother appears daily with an Enyo mit!

I travelled to Sydney in April to attend DesignEX 2010 and saw so many wonderful products and displays that truly inspired me. So today (May 21st) on The Circle Ch 10 I shared with the girls (and the rest of Australia!) a couple of award winners that truly caught my eye.

Caesarstone -Motiva
Winner Category - Internal Surface Finishes
First company to use a quartz surface with laser technology. The design is lasered into the surface then sandblasted in the grooves. It can be used for a walls, furniture, benches and of course kitchens. When using in kitchens it must comply with the Building Code of Australian Standards. At this time it comes in the Black Crocodile design and the White Lace design.

Skape Tub by Karim Rashid for Xflo
Winner Category - Bathrooms
The tub is made of a Liquid Acrylic Resin tub to help create perfectly shaped curves and its unique seamless finish. The Skape Tub is stain resistant, antibacterial and it is designed to look like the base is growing out of the main surface.

BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL PT 2

Tranquil river in the heart of Bright

Front of Boynton's Feathertop Winery, and well we did have to sample their hospitality.

I am so grateful Bright has the most stunning scenery to explore on foot and bikes as there is so much food and wine to explore that you have to keep active to work it all off!

We walked to town , rode the Mountain trail (which happened to end up at a Feathertop winery- of course!) and finished our arduous day with an in-house massage, stoked the open fire, played cards and enjoyed the peace.

It's easy to get lost in the grand scenery, but don't forget to look down.
You never know what you might see!

The last morning we had a long breakfast with the morning papers (yes we did it hard didn't we) and I took myself off to explore the local shops while hubby rode his bike to get his fix of local football.
The shops were a great mix of craft, lollies, kids toys but the shop that sticks in my mind the most was Country Tales book store. It IS what every bookstore should be. Rows and rows of books with lots of little stands showing favourite books with individual reviews. Once I had my selection and went to the counter the girl behind the counter was so enthusiastic, knew the books I picked up (and everyone else who came to the counter) and talked about how much she loved them that I couldn't wait to sit under a tree and get lost in them. She had just opened the store 5 days before and her passion filled the shop and rubbed off on everyone that entered. I do hope you get to Bright and her store as I haven't had such a wonderful retail experience like that in a long time!

Go to the Country Tales Book Store and ask for Sally, she is gorgeous!!

So that is our 3 day adventure in Bright, Parts 1&2. I hope you get to this magical part of Victoria as it has put a spell on my husband and I and we are planning to go back again next year.

P.S. I didn't ask the outcome of the local footy, but to my defense he didn't ask about my shopping either ;)

BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL PT 1

After a four hour drive (with our stop to Benalla) we passed our first winery, trail of Autumn leaves were beginning, but what made us stop was a fence made of bikes.
Bike riding to Bright is not a simple task but there is a disused rail line called the Murray Mountain Rail Trail that has been turned into a bike track. I wonder if this fence is made from some of those that didn't quite make it?
We made it to our accomodation - The Odd Frog with two choc frogs to greet us and our food fest had begun.

A ten minute walk into to town and we walked the streets to find a restaurant to celebrate our 10yr wedding anniversary for the evening. Most were closed on a slow Thursday so our only options were a small cafe or cuisine at Simones, who by the way has two chef hats.
'We are expensive', was our introduction to an inquiry if they were open. Yes, it was but hey 10 years married is a bit of a milestone in these times so 'expensive Simone's' it was. Dinner booked and now to fill the rest of the day.

The beauty of Bright is everywhere you turn is a park or outdoor area more stunning and inviting than the next. Opposite Simone's we stepped into the boutique Bright Brewery and decided on a sample tray of their beers. Seeing as though I hate beer I had a sip of each and left the tasting to my husband. What made the bitter taste more palatable was the view of the weeping trees, oaks and if you have kids, they can play on the fort-like playground as you watch from the outdoor bench seats.
Back to room to get ready we used the telescope on the suspended balcony but didn't need it as we were almost at arms reach of the local kangaroos.
Relaxed and ready for the the evening we made it to Simone's and luck be it a food critic was on the next table so we also got the best food and best service possible.
Verdict - expensive, but definitely worth it. (Oh, and lucky we went there as I was surprised with a diamond ring for our anniversary - wouldn't have been so glamorous in a small cafe!)

BARCELONA MEETS BENALLA

Deciding to travel to Bright, Victoria for a 5 day break turned into a discovery of delights that had my husband and I both saying "why haven't we been here before" & "sometimes the best places are right in your own back yard". Traveling the big wide world is an exciting and adventurous time but how well do you know your own country?

Our goal was a 4 hour drive to Bright with no stops and 'get us there fast'. But 2 hours into the trip we were starving and needed the ol' toilet break. Much to my husbands initial disgust I talked him into turning off to Benalla (which would take an extra 10kms out of our way). "Quick stop and we are out"- was the call from both of us. What we didn't expect was how beautiful it was.
With an unusual 25 degree Autumn day streaming through our windows it wasnt hard to be enticed by the local Botanical gardens as it blinded us with red roses, mature trees and a playground to envy any major town park. The locals were making the most of the sun and gorgeous parks so we got into the spirit and walked around the rose garden, found a monument to 'Weary' Dunlop and decided it was worth finding a nice cafe and stay for lunch. As we crossed the bridge a large public space rose from the river bank and made us feel we were being transported to Spain. The literature we found had no hint of a Guadi influence but the sinuous lines of the structure felt a world away from country Benalla.
A community project that is a work in progress since 1983 was adorned in handmade tiles picturing fishes, reptiles, local flora and its many nook and crannies were a delight to discover.

Opposite we noticed the local art gallery with a cafe on the balcony, so the venue for lunch was decided.
Another unexpected delight was not only the view but the menu filled with dishes made from locally made produce and this quick lunch had now turned into a feast.
We hadn't officially started our holiday but already my shoulders were relaxed, not scrunched to my ears and my husband had thrown the schedule out the window.

THE CIRCLE - CHANNEL 10

What a fantastic morning I had with the girls on The Circle today! If you thought there were laughs on the screen you should have seen it when we weren't on air. My lips are sealed!
I was invited on today (Tuesday 13th April) to talk about fun things for kids.

I think kids make a lot of their own fun and are always looking for ways to be inspired (even though they don't always know it) so I looked for things to bring on the show that I thought would not only stimulate visually, but give kids either an outlet to create or to give them reason to 'dream'.

Even though this Castle and Rocking chair are for the kids, we had way too much fun putting them together and painting them. I hope the kids in your house get the chance to play with these! The chair can take up to 40 kilos in weight which means it could last them all through Primary School!

These rugs are the perfect 'decor' starter for a kids room. The rugs can set the theme and then all you simply need to do is add a bright doona with some of the colours in the rug, and you have a new room the same day!

Wall decals have come a long way over the past year and these removable decals really struck me as the pictures were so unusual and quirky! I thought the one on the left was perfect for kids to either help them count sheep to sleep, with numbers added gradually as they sleep in their own bed, or for any other use to give a positive effect in your child's room. www.jujube.net.au

And last but not least these beautiful lamps. I could have called them bedside lamps but I think they can be put in so many different places of a room. High on a shelf, under the window, sitting amongst the soft toy collection, but most of all it should be placed in a spot your child can see perfectly from their bed. There is something serene and magical about these lamps that I think will soothe a child back to sleep from a nightmare or as they are first trying to sleep, and help conjour beautiful dreams as their imagination goes wild. www.downtothewoods.com.au

SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO BE REAL

I love my job, I love creating and feel passionate about everything I do. The down side is the creative world can trigger times of self-doubt, questioning your ability and sometimes thinking it is all to hard. I am a big supporter of looking for inspiration from people who have made millions in areas they love and are passionate about. Reading books, listening to seminars, creative thinking and taking advice from others who have lived their dream or on their own exciting journey. But still there are times when this isn't enough.
Once you put down that book, turn off the computer, walk out of that seminar all you are left with is you. Your feelings, your drive, your attitude. My blog, website and youtube channel are all about interiors, quirky ideas and connecting to the world of social media, so why am I posting this blog?
I have had a few pretty hard weeks inspiration and motivation wise, have dabbled in a little self-doubt and pity and have been struggling to take full responsibility of pulling myself out of that never-ending rabbit hole. Then a girlfriend posted this video of Nick Vujicic on Facebook and all self-doubt melted away. Sounds too easy and possibly a little 'wanky', yes I know.
I have watched Nick on Oprah and seen him before so it is not like I haven't thought he was amazing and inspiring and thought, 'if he can be so positive with such huge setbacks, what is my issue?' So why is this different? Timing. Watching something like this when you have indulged in a little too much self-pity jolts you. Nick's motto of , "Attitude is Altitude" really hit me. Attitude is everything and your attitude to how you see yourself is your biggest destroyer, or can be your saviour.
My business and life motto is "Expression is the greatest form of Freedom" as creating, feeling and saying who and what you are, I believe will set you free and leave you open to what your heart desires. Watching this video gave me my belief back and reconnect with my life motto.
I hope Nick's attitude will give you a little something to lift your day and help set you free.

We all love to recycle and create from what is lying around but this amazing artist
Lisa Kokin has gone to the next level and created art that is not only unique but inspiring. She creates individual sculptures as well as art gallery installations and then when you think she cant get anymore creative she brings out a book. Not the written kind but the creative kind.
I love her work and imagine if she doesn't already wear glasses she might have to in the future with the intricate works she produces.

CREATE A BEACH FEEL IN YOUR HOME

The beach is a place to have a holiday, relax, go swimming, play with your families but it also has incredible visuals with its dramatic sunrises and sunsets and powerful storms. The beach has all parts of the colour wheel with its warm reds and oranges and cooling blues and greys.

It is easy to go over board when introducing a beach scheme to your home so take it slow and look for one element first for your inspiration.

Use this as a base to build your scheme around. Be careful not to try and re-create all the elements of the beach in one room as it will be in danger of being cluttered and tacky.

Renting can make you feel transient and not feeling like you belong but -'Where ever we lay our hat -it has to be home'. When you are renting you can feel restricted by the do's and don't's of your rental agreement, leaving fear about doing anything at all to personalise your home. It is all about thinking 'off the wall' and creating a space that makes you happy whether you own it or not.

When renovating a kitchen for the first time it can be daunting looking at the price tag. The cost of benches, cupboards, applicances, electrics, plumbing can literally blow your budget out of the water. Anywhere you can save money has got to be a bonus. Look at these 'clever' ways to save a bit of money. and by using recycled timbers or gaining a kitchen that otherwise would end in land fill you are doing your bit for the environment.
Rupert Blanchard is doing some works for a large 3 story Victorian conversion and well - they obviously are going for the quirky angle.

If you are looking for a more finished and upmarket look you can buy and sell online. Get rid of your kitchen and buy some one else's, or buy ex-showroom displays. Yes a bit like e-bay except they specalise just in kitchens. One such company is secondhandkitchens.com.au. If this isnt in your country I am sure you can find one on a google searchNow this is recycling your kitchen in a whole new way. The Sustainable Sky Box serves as a multi-purpose space for cultural activities
And when you are de-cluttering why not give your utensils, pots and pans to an artist and see what they come up with! London Artist Subodh Gupta, created this skull sculpture for the Frieze art fair in London but is just one of his large collection
And for that touch of elegance there is alwasy the wine glass chandelier. Glasklasen is a genuine product of Swedish art industry, designed by a team of two architects - Gunnar Cedervall and Björn Stillefors - and an industrial designer - Jörgen Pudeck. The wine glasses are to to be used, then washed and put back - a certain conversation piece!

Never being to Harrods before I am sure they have wonderful displays all year round but being here at Christmas time is a real treat. To coincide with the musical Wicked, Harrods has filled their windows with homage to the play and movie and a yellow brick road to help you get around. I was there at nine at night so the crowds were easy to deal with but I hear the frantic shopping is here now so I hope you have done your shopping!

Brooks Guesthouse
When you book accomodation online you can sometimes be playing a game of chance but on this occasion it came up a winner! Brooks guesthouse in Bath ticked all the boxes with attentive hospitality, a tasty and filling breakfast but my big tick was the interiors. I love to mix period and modern details when I design, and the interiors of the guest house carry if off with ease. The guesthouse is sympathetic to the original Victorian features and as you make your way around the charm is slowly revealed and produces pure delight.
Sit in the guest lounge by the fireOur room was relaxing in an old fashioned way and finished with lush silk curtainsThe ensuite was small but was fitted with good quality modern fittings and a hot shower was welcomed at the end of the day with the temperature hitting a high of four degrees

The 'comforting' cooked breakfast was served on the lower floor. Original parquetry and bluestone floor and complimented with simple modern and aged furniture and cleverly decorated with teapots.A diversion to the powder room revealed a sense of whimsy.

Entry to Thermal Spa - 1hr massage and 2 hours in the spa and steam room and your day is set!Bath, England was created by the Romans as a place of relaxation and to honour the gods with rituals. After spending two days there I am in love with the place! A morning in the modern Thermal Day spa, followed by boutique shopping surrounded by elegant Christmas lighting, wandering the streets and finally settling for lunch with a bottle of wine was a great way to spend day one

Do you go into a shop because you need something? Want something? Or just purely inspired by what you see from the street? With the speed internet shopping has steam-rollered its way into the retail market it is even more relevant that the art of window dressing is not lost. I put retail merchandising and window dressing in two different categories. Merchandising is about the push of the product and purely about sales, but window dressing now there is is where the creative mind lies. In one day of walking the London suburbs I came across very different types of window dressing and all made me want to see more. Unfortunately a couple of shops were closed and I may never get there again but just by me telling you, could be enough for you to want to walk through the door and support these shops.

Through the looking glass, Antwell, East London-Through the looking glass was all about the Alice reference but the cheeky placement of Flamingos and bunnies kept my gaze...
All Saints, Chain store - These shops are dotted through put London and the same display is in every window, with antique sewing machines floor to ceiling in every window. Now it is regimented, but it makes you stop and look to see if they are real and wonder how they collected all these and how long it must have taken AND it is repeated in every store. www.allsaints.com
Moosh - Fulham - This shot is taken inside and I couldn't wait to get in. A juice bar in the middle of Fulham with no park to be seen, so they created their very own with fake grass, trees and even a 70's mural of woodlands. http://www.mooshfruit.com/
Osbourne & Little, Kings Rd - Wholesalers of fabrics and wallpapers but instead of blurting rolls of fabrics making it obvious, they have taken to the Christmas Spirit with Rudolph as their spokesperson! http://www.osborneandlittle.com/
Vive La Rose, Princes Arcade- I have seen many flower shops that look like this but it caught my eye as it was in a tiny arcade amongst shops that were awash with bright colours, lights and 'bling' . The simple beauty of this display lead me inside for some quiet respite.
